Lava tree moulds are hollow columns formed when a lava flow moves through a forest. The lava chills and hardens against the trunks while the wood inside eventually disappears, leaving vertical or fallen tree-shaped cavities in the rock. Some retain detailed impressions of bark and mark the exact positions of trees buried thousands of years ago. The eruption removes the forest but leaves its floor plan behind.
