Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano in northern Tanzania and the only one on Earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. Cooler and more fluid than ordinary lava, it emerges black and flows like oil. Exposure to moisture then transforms it into a pale grey-white rock, leaving the volcano looking dusted with snow. Its Maasai name means “Mountain of God.”
